Events for the Anniversary of a Parish in Albania

2023 marks the 30th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s visit to Albania. On that occasion, he recalled the many priests who suffered under communism and were killed for administering the Sacraments, as well as the unknown number of Catholics who had likewise been imprisoned and murdered because of their faith. At that time, the dictator Enver Hodscha had banned all religion, and in 1967, had even made Albania the world‘s first “atheist state,” something no other state had done, not even China or the Soviet Union. The Pope called it a “scourge.” 

The parish of Korça is in southeast Albania and was founded the same year that John Paul II made his visit, so it is also celebrating its 30th anniversary. The parish’s beginnings were difficult. After decades of atheist rule, there was extreme poverty and a profound spiritual need. Priests and religious had to start by supporting the people: by helping them materially and re-establishing Church life. 

Today, there is good reason to give thanks. The parish is very much alive, and Father Riccardo Scorsone wants to sponsor a range of activities, not only to celebrate the parish’s anniversary, but also to enhance the public understanding of what the Catholic Church is. He says that he wants people “to come into contact with the Gospel message.” He is planning an exhibition, live concerts, and a book on the history of the Catholic Church in Korça. He also wants to organize a pilgrimage to Rome for 10 representatives of the various faith communities in town (two each from the Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Orthodox, and Bektaschi communities), and participants will have the opportunity to meet with Pope Francis. The parish of Korça is likewise involved in different activities aimed at fostering fraternal coexistence among the faith communities. 

ACN has already helped the parish with the renovation of their church and pastoral center, and a new pastoral vehicle. And thanks to the help of our benefactors, Father Riccardo, who, for many years, had nowhere to live in town, finally has a permanent residence in Korça.
