Help Construct a Parish House and Chapel in India
The Diocese of Bettiah lies in one of the poorest regions of India. Located in the far northeast, on the frontier with Nepal, the diocese was established in 1895. Initially, there were only a handful of Catholic families here, but gradually more have settled. Right from the start, the Catholic Church there was devoted to caring for the poor and needy, regardless of their religion or caste status.
The need remains great to this day. In the rainy season, most people plant on the small plots of land they own, but the harvest is not enough to live on. For the rest of the year, most of them are forced to toil as day laborers, working for others. Few can read and write, and the caste and dowry systems are both still widespread, the latter placing an immense financial burden on the families.
The Church is helping the people to improve their living conditions, offering many opportunities in the parishes, especially for women, to improve themselves and gain an education. Above all, there is a deep longing among the Catholic faithful for the Sacraments and for spiritual accompaniment.
For now, local Catholics here do not have a proper church. The present space that is used as a chapel is in an old mud house that also contains the priest‘s living quarters. It is already over a hundred years old and far too small. The roof tiles are simply dried clay; rats have gnawed holes in the walls and floor, and the timbers have been eaten away by termites. The roof is in danger of collapsing at any moment and also leaks badly during the rainy season. There is so little space that the parish ‘office’ has to be housed on the veranda.
We are proposing to give $32,200 so that they can build a decent chapel and also provide a modest but fitting place for the priests to stay as well.
Will you help us fulfill this promise to construct a parish house and chapel in this poor region of India?
We are sure the local priest and faithful will remember you in their grateful prayers.
