Equipment for a Catholic Radio Station in the Congo

Catholics in the Archdiocese of Bukavu, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, have reason to rejoice. Thanks to the support of our benefactors, ACN could provide them with $13,000 to modernize and upgrade Radio Maria, their local radio station, and buy a generator to avoid the power outages that occur so often.

As a result, they have increased their monthly broadcasts from 15 to 40.

This is huge news for the archdiocese. Radio is crucially important for communication not just in the Congo, but across Africa, where parishes usually cover large stretches of land. Radio allows the Church to reach the faithful in remote villages: to inform, educate, and facilitate a spiritual life.

Plus, in many parts of the eastern Congo, where the Archdiocese of Bukavu is, armed rebel groups make life difficult for ordinary people, who, as a result, cannot easily travel. There is constant violence in this particular area, against the people and Church institutions (like parishes and convents), which creates widespread fear and instability. The violence is largely caused by ethnic conflict, as well as competition for natural resources. But religion has motivated some more recent attacks.

With Radio Maria, the Church can transmit live broadcasts of the Mass to be enjoyed from the relative safety of home, and offer consolation and advice to those who need it most in the Congo.

Our heartfelt thanks for your support!
