A Generator for Saint Joseph’s Parish in Ukraine
Life is not easy in the town of Dnipro, where Russia’s war on Ukraine has made air raid sirens and rocket attacks a constant reality. Two hundred people from the Latin Catholic Parish of Saint Joseph have already fled the city. “They are waiting for the war to end. They are afraid to return, since life in Dnipro is dangerous,” explains Capuchin Father Yaroslav Fedirchuk.
Still, the parish is extremely active, celebrating two Holy Masses each day, including a homily. Even the weekday Masses are attended by several dozen faithful, and on Sundays, there are up to 200 people. The church remains open all day long, offering all people the chance to come to God in prayer.
There are also many people seeking practical help. Father Jaroslav explains, “We have over 10,000 needy people on our register who have asked us for food, clothing, blankets, mattresses, toiletries, and cleaning materials.“
Among the major challenges of the war in Ukraine are power cuts that last for hours, a failing water supply, and the breakdown of public transportation. But despite this, the parish continues to hold regular meetings and catechetical sessions for people of all ages. “We offer the sacraments to those who are prepared, and we systematically care for the sick and victims of the war,” Father Jaroslav adds.
The parish, too, has suffered from the power cuts, which can occur without warning at any time. And thanks to your generosity, we were able to give $15,644 for an emergency generator. Father Jaroslav and his parishioners are profoundly grateful to you all and have promised to keep you in their prayers!
