Success Story: A Car for a Parish in Tanzania

There is great rejoicing in the Parish of Butundwe in northwest Tanzania. Thanks to your generous help, Father John Bosco Lwenge at last has a car! This will make his pastoral ministry much easier. Everyone in the parish is delighted and grateful as well, since now they will be able to see their parish priest more frequently than before.

The parish covers a large area and has twenty-eight outstations, some of which are over 20 miles from the center. Father John travels to each of them, celebrating Mass, conducting funerals, administering the Sacrament of the Sick, and visiting with the people. In addition, he also teaches in several schools, as well as at the catechists’ training center over 40 miles away. Currently, he is also standing in at a neighboring parish, since the priest is sick and unable to perform his duties.

“My pastoral work is hard and difficult, and the roads are dangerous since I have no car,” Father John had earlier written to us. At that time, he only had a moped for transportation. In the rainy season, many of the roads were impassable for him, since they rapidly turned into rivers of mud and so become almost impossible to navigate without a sturdy off-road vehicle.

This is a poor and underdeveloped region. Only a few places have an electrical supply, and most people have to travel 40 or 50 miles for medical treatment. Seriously ill patients and pregnant women are often brought to hospital on bicycles – shortly before Father John sought our help, a pregnant woman died on the way to hospital. “That was a heartbreaking experience for me,” he acknowledges. With his new car, Father John can now also perform a priceless service by helping in medical emergencies, and he will no doubt save lives as a result.

Father John and his parishioners used to pray every day that they might receive help – and you did not disappoint them. Thanks to you, we were able to give $17,300 for their new car.

Our heartfelt thanks to all of you for your generosity!
